About This Project
Summary
Crozer Health, a major hospital system in southeast Pennsylvania serving 100K patients a year, was closed due to bankruptcy in early May 2025. Over 33 days, we captured stories from 40+ Crozer physicians, nurses, paramedics, and medical assistants; public officials; and journalists. We recorded their response to the hospital's doors closing, the social and economic fallout that followed, and legislators’ plans to prevent future tragedies. The 5-part series dropped each week in May 2025.
Goals & Objectives
The Crozer Health system collapsed as a result of private equity's financial extraction of its assets, ruthlessly engineered over nearly a decade. Our goal is to shine a light - and raise the red flag - on the role private equity in healthcare to prevent this from happening to other health systems.
Results & Impact
Listenership doubled as Crozer staff and public officials shared our real-time record of the devastation in PA and its implications writ large. Legislators are now using the series to aid the passage of the Health System Protection Act that will put guardrails on private equity in healthcare in PA.
