Creating Homes and Preventing Homelessness for Los Angeles’ Transition-Age Foster Youth

About This Project

Summary

A Sense of Home provides critical housing support for 150 transition-age foster youth (TAY) throughout L.A. County a year. Our innovative model revolves around Home Creations, where our team of volunteers and alumni youth transform empty, unworkable living spaces into fully functional and emotionally comforting homes by selecting over 330 customized items (furniture, home goods, and appliances) for each TAY. We also provide youth with wrap-around services, mentorship and a community of support.

Goals & Objectives

We know that stable housing is one of the most important social determinants of health and through our Home Creations, we prevent homelessness and help ensure housing stability and a strong sense of community for TAY foster youth and their families throughout L.A. County.

Results & Impact

A Sense of Home has created 950+ homes thanks to 22,000 volunteers since inception and has served as the after-foster care community for 2,700 young people and their families. As a testament to our impact, 93% of youth have maintained their tenancy after five years.
