About This Project
Summary
Five-part package exploring how interlocking economic factors bake inequality into the U.S. retirement system, making it harder for Black families to invest in their financial future. We used data and feature reporting to measure the scope of retirement inequity but also engage with its real-world impact — talking to older Black couples about their retirement strategies, offering practical financial advice and presenting key policy ideas aimed at producing better outcomes for Black retirees.
Goals & Objectives
With the “Retiring While Black” series, we wanted to shine a bright light on retirement inequity and help our ethnically, geographically and economically diverse audience understand the forces behind it, and what families, companies and policy makers are doing to address it.
Results & Impact
The package demonstrated AARP’s commitment to examining issues through an equity lens and helping ensure all workers have the opportunity to build a stable and secure retirement. The article on the racial wealth gap got nearly 20,000 page views and generated a lively debate on causes and effects.
