About This Project
Summary
This story recounts the personal story of Hai Thai-Tang whose journey to the American dream began in 1975 when he and his family fled Vietnam and settled in the U.S. The story marks the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, but it is a narrative that draws people in and provides context for a historical event: the thousands of South Vietnamese who fled their country and settled here. The U.S. is now home to the largest number of Vietnamese-born people outside of their native country.
Goals & Objectives
We wanted to provide context for a historical event and the anniversary. As there’s so much discussion of immigration today, we also chose to tell the story of someone who came to the U.S., found success, and contributed to our culture in a unique way.
Results & Impact
This story received 15,200 Uvs /20,800 PVs and was used as part of a campaign to highlight AAPI Heritage Month in May. We used this story to drive readers of our print magazine to our online site using a QR code to see "extras" as part of an initiative to improve technology use among older adults.
