About This Project
Summary
On his first Father’s Day, political prisoner Mahmoud Khalil sat in a detention center 1,500 miles away from his wife and newborn son, as punishment for speaking out in support of Palestinian rights. A few fathers joined the ACLU to read Mahmoud’s first words to his son in a video format. Our fight will not stop until we're all able to exercise our First Amendment rights without fear of retaliation.
Goals & Objectives
Our goal was to call attention to Mahmoud Khalil's detention, and to support in the fight to free him and all those unjustly detained by ICE.
Results & Impact
We garnered coverage in outlets such as the Guardian, reached over 1.3 million people through our social media efforts, and delivered over 165k messages to local lawmakers through our petition to Free Mahmoud Khalil. In the days after the video was published, Mahmoud Khalil was freed from detention.
