About This Project
Summary
Critics say the Cambodian government's attacks on opposition members and activists have gone global. On January 7, 2025, former Cambodian opposition MP, Lim Kimya, was gunned down in central Bangkok. A former Thai marine confessed to carrying out the hit, but two Cambodians with ties to their country's ruling party are on the run, suspected of organising the murder. While Lim Kimya's family and friends seek justice, Cambodia’s government denies any involvement. 101 East investigates.
Goals & Objectives
In a compelling investigation, 101 East traveled across Asia, Europe and the US to investigate the forces behind a brazen assassination in Bangkok. On the journey, the team sought to reveal a terrifying global campaign to track down and silence critics of Cambodia’s authoritarian government.
Results & Impact
101 East’s investigation applied rare scrutiny to a government that has systematically dismantled independent media at home. In just over a week, the film attracted over 150,000 YouTube views, hundreds of comments highlighting the quality of the journalism and receiving widespread critical acclaim.
