Trusted Messengers: Impoving Health Equity in Under Resourced Communities
Allergy & Asthma Network PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
Allergy & Asthma Network’s Trusted Messengers (TM) is our signature health equity initiative launched in 2020 to address asthma, allergy, eczema, and related health disparities, with a focus in under-resourced and COVID-impacted communities. TM partners with trusted local organizations and leaders to offer free community screenings, bilingual educational materials (in English and Spanish), and a six-week virtual asthma coaching program for ongoing support.
Goals & Objectives
Trusted Messengers aims to increase awareness of asthma disparities; deliver culturally competent education in English and Spanish; improve access to screening and early intervention; reduce unplanned doctor, urgent care (UC), and hospital visits; foster improved self-management and self-advocacy.
Results & Impact
In 2024, TM outreach engaged 1,712 people across 15 cities; screened 309; and enrolled 88 in virtual asthma coaching. Participants with uncontrolled asthma reported significant post-coaching improvements: 78% better asthma control and a 33% and 28% decrease in doctor and UC/ER visits, respectively.
