About This Project
Summary
AGU recently completed the renovation of its 62,000 sq ft headquarters in Washington, D.C, into a net zero energy building. The renovation is the first of its kind in the nation’s capital and now holds the highest LEED score for a commercial building in D.C. In 1979, AGU purchased a small office building in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, then constructed a larger building on the site in 1994. By 2013, the building and infrastructure were reaching the end of their useful lives.
Goals & Objectives
Seizing the opportunity to transform its headquarters into a representation of the association’s mission, science and purpose, AGU partnered with Hickok Cole architects, Interface Engineering and project management firm MGAC to bring this ambitious net zero energy project to life.
Results & Impact
Each of the partners brought their profession-specific expertise and resources to address the immediate and long-term challenge of climate change. The renovated building is net zero energy meaning the total amount of energy it uses yearly is equal to or less than the amount of energy created onsite.
