About This Project

Summary

The AAMI Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) Apprenticeship, a US Department of Labor-registered program, has helped employers nationwide train apprentices at significantly reduced costs, build in-house programs, and access grants, ensuring a stronger pipeline of skilled healthcare technology management professionals. It offers 6,000 hours of paid, on-the-job training in safety, electronics, IT, and more. More than 3000 candidates and 23 employers have connected with AAMI since its launch.

Goals & Objectives

The US needs 7,000 more BMETs annually to maintain medical devices, yet fewer than 400 graduate each year. The AAMI Apprenticeship program helps close that gap by providing hospitals and service providers with standardized in-house training resources, creating a direct-to-employer talent pipeline.

Results & Impact

To start, the program has partnered with two dozen employers. This resulted in the graduation of an inaugural class of 14 new apprentices in 2025. Program early adapters report improved retention, growth in technician numbers, team diversity, and stronger professional development for their teams.
