A Glimpse of Stability. The Impact and Aftermath of Pandemic Aid for Financially Struggling Families: From Unprecedented Investments to “You’re On Your Own”
Better Life Lab at New America PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
Our research and storytelling project centered families living on low wages sharing how unprecedented federal pandemic aid impacted their lives, and what they wanted the public and policymakers to know about what they need to thrive. We produced ethnographic case studies, facilitated storytelling to give narrators control over their own stories, an interactive game, journalism crafted with ethical guidelines, a policy analysis and timeline, and engaging multi-media content published widely.
Goals & Objectives
We sought to raise awareness of the challenges poverty creates, upend harmful false narratives, and show how equitable family-supportive public policies and investments, workplaces and cultural attitudes give families breathing room, stability and open opportunities, and how that benefits society.
Results & Impact
Our op-eds appeared in CNN and The Guardian and won a major writing award. We briefed public officials and were interviewed by influencers. Our newsletter, media and social media campaign reached over 250,000 people. Our narrators felt seen. Advocacy organizations use our report as a resource.
