About This Project

Summary

Humans really are meant to move and kids, in particular, have a lot of energy to burn. So why do we ask kids to sit at a desk all day? We offer the ButtOn Chair as a free CNC router file download, as well as a hand tool pattern, so that an infinite number of active chairs can be released into the world with a little elbow grease and the cost of plywood, bungee cord and a lacrosse ball. For those less handy, we also offer a polished kit to build their own chair.

Goals & Objectives

Our goal is to make active sitting freely available to schools throughout the US, and the world. The ButtOn Chair has been downloaded over 4,200 times. We don't know how many chairs have been made, but it's potentially tens of thousands, since you only need one pattern file to make infinite chairs.

Results & Impact

We met a high school shop teacher whose class built 50 chairs for the younger students in the district. Students learned about how to project manage and budget. Younger students will get to sit actively this school year, increasing focus and redirecting energy, in a form of "sanctioned squirming."
