Federal Overhaul: Capital B's Reporting on How Federal Layoffs Impacted Black Workers
Capital B PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
After assuming office, President Trump promptly gutted the federal workforce. In the multipart series, "Federal Overhaul,” Brandon Tensley explored this erosion of the workforce and the deep, ongoing impact of the mass firings on Black communities from the workers themselves to the departments protecting basic rights. He also looked into the under-discussed psychological toll of the layoffs on Black workers and how federal employment has been a lifeline for many Black families for decades.
Goals & Objectives
The goal of the project was to break down the often overlooked aspects of these cuts and show how they are impacting Black communities. These stories allowed Brandon to lean into his own experiences as a Black gay man from South Carolina to report on discrimination in its many forms.
Results & Impact
The impact of Brandon’s series has been clear. Black federal workers — past and present — have reached out to him to thank him for giving them space, shining a light on the PTSD they’re experiencing, and centering his community as he pursues accountability.
