About This Project

Summary

With funding from NEH, IMLS, NY-Life, and Virginia Humanities—and in collaboration with the Robert Russa Moton Museum—documentary filmmaker Richard Wormser and C&G Partners created The Barbara Johns Story, an interactive documentary website based on his Peabody Award-winning PBS series The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow. Centered on Barbara Johns’ 1951 student strike, the project uses archival media and interviews to inspire civic action and deepen understanding of civil rights history.

Goals & Objectives

Weave a compelling historical narrative through an inquiry arc that deepens students' understanding of historical content and inspires them to take informed action in their world. Particular attention has been given to designing content appropriate for both middle and high school students.

Results & Impact

The project has just launched and has not yet been officially integrated into middle and high school curricula. Initial user testing with students and educators suggests that this approach to challenging historical content enhances both students’ initial interest and their continued engagement.
