About This Project

Summary

Nunaka, a game developed by FableVision Studios, Chugachmiut, and the Sugpiaq people of Alaska, explores Sugpiaq heritage, the Sugt'stun language, and school readiness skills for 3-5-year-olds. Play as a Sugpiaq child living in a village based on Sugpiaq communities in the Chugach region. Users make an avatar, explore the village, complete minigames, and interact with residents of the village. Players receive a scrapbook of their activities at the end of each episode.

Goals & Objectives

Nunaka posits school readiness goals via a culturally relevant approach for 3-5-year-olds in Head Start programs in Alaska’s Chugach region. Standards include control, strength, and coordination of fine motor skills, classification skills, counting by ones, pattern recognition, and more.

Results & Impact

Nunaka has had a profound impact on learners’ in school readiness, preserving the Sugt’stun language, and celebrating the contributions of women and people of color. This game has set a precedent, linking indigenous language to education, with far-reaching implications for early education.
