About This Project

Summary

Microbes with the power to fight climate change may be hiding in an unexpected place: your home. Seed Health and The Two Frontiers Project activated community scientists across the U.S. through a multi-phase campaign to collect microbial samples from dishwashers, showerheads, and natural hot springs—environments where only the most resilient microbes survive. The discoveries may uncover ‘extreme’ microbes with traits that unlock breakthrough innovations in climate resilience and biotechnology.

Goals & Objectives

Microbes have shown promise in accelerating clean hydrogen production, breaking down pollutants, and converting CO2 into usable materials. This campaign aimed to discover similarly extraordinary organisms with transformative potential—microbes that could address the planet’s most urgent challenges.

Results & Impact

Over 1K data points were submitted, including from six previously undocumented springs. Over 100 microbial samples were collected, and early analysis reveals several microbes with promising potential for carbon capture. All findings will be added to a ‘living database,’ fueling future research.
