About This Project

Summary

Global Footprint Network advances sustainability through education and data science. By calculating a user's individual Ecological Footprint, a metric that calculates human demand on nature versus Earth's capacity to regenerate, we can educate and raise awareness that can change people’s behavior over time. The platform is centered on data-driven tools, but is intentionally designed to be immersive and playful so the Footprint Calculator is visually inviting.

Goals & Objectives

The goal is to help users understand and reduce their ecological impact, enabling individuals to measure their personal and family’s footprint, fostering decisions that support sustainable living within Earth’s capacity, with the primary goal to raise awareness around earth’s limited resources.

Results & Impact

The calculator has been used by 18+ million people and featured in Earth Overshoot Day campaigns that reach billions. It has sparked policy change and global action from individuals in over 50 countries, and its success has inspired new calculators for universities, eco-tourism and governments.
