About This Project

Summary

Imagine how typing would be if you had to long-press each letter to change it to a capital letter, then do it again to get a lowercase letter: painful, slow and frustrating. And yet, that’s exactly what we have to suffer through when we want to modify the appearance of our emoji.

Goals & Objectives

Align keyboard functionality with how research shows users actually use skin-toned emoji, speeding up communication: adjust one emoji and this will be applied to every other compatible emoji across your keyboard.

Results & Impact

Speeding up self-expression: variant emoji usage increased 2% and use of the variant UI decreased 10%. At Google scale this is billions of repetitive interactions avoided, thousands of hours saved. Especially impacts users with darker skin who use these emoji more often.
