About This Project

Summary

A Guide to Surviving American Healthcare is a serialized book for American patients. Posting two chapters each month, I share proven tactics for each type of medical encounter from preparing for a primary care visit to dealing with emergencies, making major medical decisions and small ones. It's free because my personal mission is to educate, empower, and encourage patients to ask questions, pursue answers, access resources, and band together to support one another. I do this on my own.

Goals & Objectives

As a result of demand, the goal was to replace and update my prior column –– Dx IQ –– that was read by over 250K people each year. The nonprofit that hosted it went bankrupt in 2024 and the columns disappeared. This is an outgrowth of the diagnostic excellence research consulting work I do.

Results & Impact

The public support I've received from patient advocates, doctors and researchers has been as heartening as the messages from patients are inspirational. I've been interviewed by podcasts and national publications and spoken at major medical conferences on the role of patients in patient safety.
