Hitachi Construction Machinery Electric Mining Truck
Hitachi Construction Machinery Americas PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
Hitachi Construction Machinery has developed an engineless, fully electric mining dump truck with a payload capacity of 150 tons or more. They worked in collaboration with ABB Ltd. to create a battery that allows the dump truck to continuously operate by charging through overhead lines and a regenerative braking system. Hitachi Construction Machinery is the first original equipment manufacturer in the world to develop an electric mining truck of this capacity and test it on an active mine site.
Goals & Objectives
Hitachi Construction Machinery’s vision is to ensure a prosperous land and society for the future, so they provide solutions that reduce customers’ environmental footprint. With the development of this truck, they are hoping to provide a zero-emission solution for the mining industry.
Results & Impact
Dump trucks on mine sites typically operate for 20 hours per day, 350 days per year. On average, Hitachi Construction Machinery’s new battery powered dump truck will eliminate the usage of around 1,200,000 liters of diesel fuel per year, eliminating 3,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
