About This Project

Summary

The engagement campaign for The Tuba Thieves brought together often-siloed audiences from across the d/Deaf-hearing spectrum. By partnering with d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing organizations, adding ASL interpretation, CART captioning, and an open-captioned film, the gatherings led to discussions around the nature of sound & communication, celebrated the importance and artistry in captioning, and improved accessibility practices to further build the relationship between hearing and d/Deaf audiences.

Goals & Objectives

The goal of the Independent Lens activations for The Tuba Thieves was to allow audiences to experience the world of the film for themselves while bringing wide-ranging audiences together through improved accessibility practices.

Results & Impact

Survey data: Near 100% of partners implemented accessibility measure(s). Attendees: Over 60% reported deeper awareness of d/Deaf-hearing spectrum; over 50% noted greater appreciation of varied sound, sight, and multimedia experiences, over 50% have deeper understanding of the value of captions.
