About This Project
Summary
In collaboration with local artists we facilitated 8 poetry and collage workshops and distributed 800 bilingual coloring books to collect data for the City of Santa Rosa, CA’s General Plan Update Re: health, housing, and environmental justice. From findings, 3 artworks were created to share back data via an interactive sculpture, a hip-hop music video, and an exhibit/party at city hall that resulted in 4 new policies that uplift desires from and positively impact historically marginalized youth.
Goals & Objectives
1)Create a culturally responsive, positive experiences for youth civic engagement 2)Obtain data from historically marginalized youth (BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Incarcerated) to collaborate on the creation of new city policies 3)Create original art works that shared collected data/policies back to community
Results & Impact
Data from 5,212 participants resulted in 4 new city policies adopted; restrict tobacco/alcohol sales, require fresh produce at convenience stores, allow all forms of urban agriculture (rooftop gardens), and require the city to incorporate equity and environmental justice re: community health.
