About This Project
Summary
Through five episodes—featuring interviews with legal scholars, subject-matter experts, and real people living at the intersection of speech and the border—“Views on First: Speech & the Border” explores how the U.S. government uses the international border as justification and pretext for censorship and surveillance, including interrogating travelers about their political and religious views and limiting Americans’ right to access foreign communications platforms such as TikTok.
Goals & Objectives
The Institute has long fought censorship and surveillance at the border through research, lawsuits, public education, and more. This podcast contextualizes our advocacy in history and incorporates the crucial perspective of people who work on and live with these issues every day.
