About This Project
Summary
A Tiny Plot is a 5-part audio documentary that follows a group of homeless people in Oakland, CA as they fight for a groundbreaking idea: their own plot of land from the city, where they could live in community and set their own rules, on their own terms. The City of Oakland called it an “experiment in co-governance," and if it worked, this small group of homeless people believed it could be a model that would help other homeless people across the state.
Goals & Objectives
Our team set out to offer our listeners an intimate and personal perspective on our nation’s deeply entrenched homelessness crisis. We wanted to immerse our listeners in the struggle, hope and complexity of building something new from the margins of a broken system, from the voices who lived it.
Results & Impact
We produced a story from homeless encampment that reached nearly 2 million listeners via podcast and broadcast. It was featured by NPR's All Things Considered, The Sunday Story and KQED's California report. Apple Podcast editors chose to feature it on the carousel homepage.
