About This Project

Summary

In this series of portraits and interviews, Long Lead and photojournalist Morgan Lieberman capture the testimony of nine of the last survivors of Japanese American incarceration. In original photos and videos, the survivors reflect on their experiences of a childhood spent in detention. They share stories of injustice and resilience, documenting what they endured, what they’ve carried with them the rest of their lives, and what about America’s past their country still hasn’t reckoned with.

Goals & Objectives

The goal of this feature is to platform the underrepresented community of Japanese Americans who were wrongly incarcerated by their own government, and give them the platform to tell their own stories, in their words. This undertaking began before the election of Donald Trump to a second term.

Results & Impact

The feature took a year to produce and published just as the Trump Administration began using the Alien Enemies Act (the same law illegally used on the Japanese in WWII) to incarcerate migrants. More than 25,000 people read the feature or watched its videos within the first 3 months.
