About This Project

Summary

Marcellus Williams was executed by the state of Missouri on Sept. 24, 2024. Marcellus was wrongfully convicted of first-degree murder in 2001, spending nearly 24 years in prison despite evidence of his innocence. In the 112 days before his execution, we worked alongside the Innocence Project (IP) to bring national awareness to Marcellus’ wrongful conviction, hoping to stop the scheduled execution. Though he was executed, Marcellus Williams has inspired a new era of advocacy.

Goals & Objectives

In our partnership with IP, we aimed to share Marcellus’ story with a nationwide audience, build an active base of support, and make it easy for people to share his story. By bringing awareness to Marcellus, we hoped to stop his wrongful execution.

Results & Impact

Our strategies yielded IP’s highest reaching, highest engaging campaign to date. From July to Sept., we sent 23 emails to 3.6M+ recipients, sent 3.5M+ SMS messages, attracted 1M new supporters, and helped facilitate 1M+ advocacy actions. We are grateful to everyone who joined our fight for justice.
