About This Project

Summary

NASA is famous for beautiful space images, but did you know you can listen to them? Go behind the scenes with the team that creates “sonifications,” translations of data into sound, and learn how meaningful they are to people who are blind or low-vision.

Goals & Objectives

Data sonification extrapolates data into sound so that blind people can experience images, in this case, of astronomical objects, that otherwise have been out of the realm of visceral experience for them. Our goal is to bring the awe and wonder of astronomy to the BVI community through listening.

Results & Impact

To quote our blind Arts & Culture Consultant, "having all of these access points is a dream come true for a lifelong astronomy lover like me." We are finding that we are playing a role in shifting the accessibility of astronomy to more people, making the enjoyment of science a reality.
