About This Project
Summary
In Feb. 2024, the NYCLU filed a lawsuit challenging a transphobic sports ban in Nassau Country on behalf of the Long Island Roller Rebels, a roller derby team. In the face of an increasingly hostile environment for LGBTQ+ people nationwide, we sought to highlight the importance of community and access to public spaces for all. Our campaign used multimedia storytelling, earned media, grassroots in-person and digital organizing to capture national attention and spur local action.
Goals & Objectives
Our objective was to highlight the importance of community and equip Long Island residents to fight transphobic policies in their own backyard. Campaign materials include email e-action, campaign web page, click-to-email online action, YouTube video, podcast episode, and social media toolkit.
Results & Impact
We garnered local and national coverage in over 100 outlets such as New York Times, CBS, and Them, reached over 200k people through our social media efforts, helped organize a rally on the steps of the Nassau County Legislature and delivered over 26k messages to local lawmakers.
