Scanning the Past to Empower the Future: A Journey in Responsible Digital Archiving
Nick Norman PROJECTAbout This Project
Summary
As a digital archivist for the Internet Archive, I worked at UC Berkeley with the Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) and the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) to digitize and preserve public, legal, and scholarly archives, including rare religious texts. I also contributed to a pilot program digitizing U.S. Supreme Court microfiche, helping scale the project by providing critical feedback on complex equipment and processes, ensuring accessibility of these vital legal documents.
Goals & Objectives
The goal was to digitize and preserve valuable archives to improve public accessibility, support transparency, and safeguard rare materials for future use. Additionally, scaling the microfiche digitization aimed to make crucial U.S. Supreme Court records accessible to researchers.
Results & Impact
The project preserves significant records and rare texts, expands access to U.S. Supreme Court documents, and improves digitization scalability. By making lesser-known materials available, it helps marginalized communities understand historical contexts and sparks conversations around outreach.
