About This Project

Summary

The Coastal Risk Index (CRI), a project sponsored by RRAA (Ocean Risk & Resilience Action Alliance) is an open-source data platform that maps, models and quantifies coastal flood risks globally, incorporating natural ecosystems (like mangroves and coral reefs), social vulnerability, economic exposure, and future climate-scenarios. It aims to inform decisions by insurers, policymakers, investors, etc., by showing the protective value of coastal ecosystems and the costs/risks if they’re lost.

Goals & Objectives

The Coastal Risk Index delivers clear data on current & future coastal flood risk, highlights the value of natural defenses, and guides policies, insurance, and finance toward investing in nature-based resilience.

Results & Impact

CRI shows reefs and mangroves shield ~15M people yearly, preventing ~$65B in damage. Without them, assets at risk rise by $363B. The platform drives uptake of nature-based solutions in planning, risk models, and finance.
