About This Project
Summary
Cerulean is an open-source platform that uses machine learning and satellite imagery to reveal chronic marine oil pollution. By detecting oil slicks and attributing them to polluting vessels or rigs, this SkyTruth tool uncovers unreported oil slicks and exposes widespread illegal bilgedumping by vessels. By democratizing otherwise inaccessible data, we equip advocates, journalists, and civil society with the visual evidence to campaign, push policy, and demand accountability.
Goals & Objectives
Our goal is to bring an end to intentional oil pollution in the ocean. By making marine pollution visible, measurable, and impossible to ignore--and by identifying those responsible--we drive systemic accountability. Our vision is a world where transparency is the norm and polluters are deterred.
Results & Impact
Cerulean has scanned 480K+ images and uncovered 23K+ oil slicks across more than 100 countries. Its data has driven legal action, policy advocacy, and journalism. For example, Oceana UK used Cerulean to expose polluters to policymakers and push for policy enforcement.
