About This Project
Summary
Autistic Counterstories is a three-part podcast series that was born out of the knowledge that lived experiences of people with autism need to complement existing autism research. The producer applied a creative audio documentary style that weaves together voices of people living on the autism spectrum and on-site recordings with a creative sounddesign. This non-narrated series allows listeners to experience the stories in people's own words, writing and music.
Goals & Objectives
1)To produce an engaging audio documentary series that counters harmful and reductionist narratives about autism and autistic people 2)To co-create the series with the interviewees 3)To organise collective listening events where scholars reflect on how the counternarratives invite for new research
Results & Impact
Autistic Counterstories created a platform for autistic people from a variety of intersections of ethnic and gender backgrounds to counter oppressive narratives. The series raised awareness of misconceptions around autism in Belgian national media and triggered reflections among autism scholars.
