About This Project
Summary
‘The Strike’ is a feature documentary that tells the story of a generation of California men who endured decades of solitary confinement and, against all odds, launched the largest hunger strike in U.S. history. Told through the stories of those who lived it, ‘The Strike’ goes?beyond making a case against solitary confinement; it illuminates the power of organizing and prisoner-led resistance, and in doing so, flips the true-crime genre on its head.
Goals & Objectives
Since the beginning of this project many years ago, we sought out to tell a story of a transformative social movement that we hoped would transform audiences, both those impacted by incarceration and those just learning about the carceral system.
Results & Impact
The impact has been incredible. We’ve reached over one million viewers – including people currently imprisoned – via television broadcast and streaming on PBS’s Independent Lens. Thousands of people have attended and been inspired at our over 100+ community and festival screenings.
