About This Project

Summary

Ten years ago, United Way of Greater Newark (UWGN) brought together nonprofits, businesses and local leaders to re-launch the Newark Asset Building Coalition (NABC). Since then, the coalition has grown immensely, with representatives from every ward, expanding financial access and economic opportunity for Newark residents. NABC’s most impactful work is through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which provides critical free tax preparation for residents making under $65,000.

Goals & Objectives

NABC helps the community save, cut debt, build skills and access wealth-building programs. Through VITA, families learn to claim the tax credits that they’re eligible for– helping return more money to the Asset Limited, Income Constrained and Employed (ALICE) population.

Results & Impact

In 2025, VITA filed over 5,500 returns, claimed over $5.2M in refunds, avoided nearly $1M in fees and secured $1.7M via the Earned Income Tax Credit, a federal benefit boosting low-to-moderate income workers. Altogether, over $6.2M returned to Newark, providing vital support to ALICE families.
