About This Project

Summary

Eyes of the Beast: Climate Disaster Survivor Stories is a documentary play adapted from real-life testimonies of 33 people who survived the extreme heat, fires, and floods that impacted British Columbia, Canada in 2021. Each performance featured a public forum where audience members were invited to speak about their own climate disaster experiences in front of an invited policy listener: an elected or unelected official who would then be invited to respond to what they heard.

Goals & Objectives

Journalists have struggled to reduce the psychological distance that is a barrier to climate action: the perception it is something happening in remote locations or a distant future. That's why Neworld Theatre partnered with Climate Disaster Project to bring frontline climate reporting to audiences.

Results & Impact

The play was performed at Victoria's Phoenix Theatre from Sept. 16-21 for 582 people. Pre- and post-treatment surveys (n=350) shows it increased the percentage who strongly agree that climate change has harmed them (+11), their community (+19), and businesses (+24) in it.
