About This Project
Summary
The WPSPJ Podcast, launched last year by the Society of Professional Journalists chapter at William Paterson University in New Jersey, elevates the voices of diverse journalists at a Hispanic-serving state school with a majority-minority, economically disadvantaged student body. The first podcast ever produced by an SPJ campus chapter, the WPSPJ Podcast features interviews between these college journalists and equally diverse voices from newsrooms across the New York metropolitan area.
Goals & Objectives
The WPSPJ Podcast allows young journalists and their teachers to benefit from the lessons our SPJ chapter learns at the dozens of activities that we arrange every year, such as hosting reporters from news outlets on campus and organizing trips to newsrooms across the New York metro area.
Results & Impact
The WPSPJ Podcast grants a voice to diverse student journalists, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. They represent a demographic often absent in the news media, because many people facing economic disadvantages simply do not have time or resources to tell their stories.
