Summary
This video features AARP Purpose Prize winner Dr. Calvin Mackie, a mechanical engineer. When his 9-year-old son lost interest in science, they started spending Saturdays together conducting experiments. Mackie realized the need to create a program for all students, especially underserved youth, so he founded STEM NOLA. The New Orleans-based nonprofit serves over 160,000 kids, with a mission to foster curiosity and encourage STEM careers. This video spotlights Mackie’s vision of “STEM for all."
Goals & Objectives
The goal of this video was to honor Dr. Calvin Mackie’s commitment to equitable access to STEM education for all students across socioeconomic and racial backgrounds and highlight the work of STEM NOLA. Additionally, it serves to inspire people 50+ to lead with purpose in their communities.
Results & Impact
Mackie received $50,000 to extend STEM NOLA's programs in new cities across the United States. The video was distributed across every major platform—event, social, press kits, YouTube, and AARP.org— and the story sparked conversations around ensuring equitable educational resources to all students.
