Summary
The African Parks Rhino Rewild project is a 10-year, three-phase initiative, to save 2,000 southern white rhinos, 15% of the global population. Rescued from a failing breeding farm in 2023, they’ll be rewilded to secure areas across Africa. Up to 300 rhinos will be translocated annually, restoring ecosystems and supporting biodiversity. As mega herbivores, rhinos shape savannas and contribute to healthy, carbon-rich landscapes. It is one of the largest wildlife translocation in history.
Goals & Objectives
The goal of Rhino Rewild is to rescue 2,000 southern white rhinos and rewild them over 10 years to secure, well-managed areas across Africa. This aims to establish or strengthen wild populations, reduce extinction risk, and support ecosystem restoration through the presence of this keystone species.
Results & Impact
African Parks has secured 2,000 rhinos, 15% of the global population, preventing their loss to conservation. So far, we successfully translocated 336 rhinos, laying the groundwork for rewilding efforts on a continental scale while continuing to provide care and preparation for future moves.
