Summary
This film explores Mexico’s role as an immigration enforcer for the United States and examines the tactics used by the Mexican government to deter migrants from reaching - and crossing - the US border. Filmed ahead of the 2024 US presidential election, Mexico’s Migrant Crackdown uses powerful personal testimonies to examine the complex intersection of migration, migration enforcement and exploitation, shedding light on the lengths to which people will go to pursue a better life.
Goals & Objectives
The film set out to provide important context to one of the biggest and most divisive political issues in the US. It aimed to examine what the Mexican government was doing to help the US tackle illegal immigration - something that’s often absent in the US political debate.
Results & Impact
Presenter Sandra Gathmann got the Mexican President to confirm the government was working with the US on immigration, something it hadn’t done explicitly before. This was picked up in the Mexican press. The film has almost 1 million views on YouTube; 33% of viewers watch all the way to the end.
