Summary
Favela Climate Memory is a groundbreaking oral history project developed by 11 community museums within Rio de Janeiro's 1000-strong Sustainable Favela Network. The Exhibition is a physical installation (documentary, banners, interactive timeline, map, “memory well”), resulting from oral histories gathered by these groups through 1,145 testimonials by 382 participants of discussion circles in 10 favelas (including the 3 largest, some marked by severe climate, climate-displacement and solutions).
Goals & Objectives
The exhibition documents and widely shares community knowledge recorded in Rio’s favelas, the world's most infamous informal settlements, passing knowledge down generations to preserve & elevate community wisdom in addressing climate change & generate crucial data to press for climate just policies.
Results & Impact
Community groups captured data no public/academic body would have accessed. Climate policy recommendations outlined & advocated for, including upgrading to permeable surfaces, NBS & a report citable by the IPCC. Exhibition is touring schools. Future: Brazil Congress, educ. materials + replication.
