About This Project

Summary

The HANAC Astoria Cornerstone program serves young residents ages 5-24 years old in NYCHA housing and the surrounding community by providing year-round programming across arts, education, science, and culture, to combat social disconnection as an avenue for joy, creativity, and self-expression. These young people are taught to self-advocate, embrace their self-worth, build their skills and talents, and maintain a strong dedication to working towards the overall common good of the community.

Goals & Objectives

The program’s goal is to provide a safe space after school for young people to explore the arts and sciences, and receive homework help. The programming is designed to get kids involved in their own learning by providing opportunities to be hands-on as they explore their passions and skills.

Results & Impact

At the hydroponic learning lab, students grow fresh produce, learning about sustainability and the value of growing food locally. With the “Take it Personal” BIPOC youth dance team, they use dance to engage in social justice, performing in the top 10 at the 2025 Step It Up NYC dance competition.
