About This Project

Summary

?KALW Public Media's Uncuffed is the country’s leading radio and podcast training program for people in prisons. Produced by men and women in California prisons in collaboration with KALW’s team, Uncuffed offers deeply humanizing stories that challenge stereotypes, foster empathy, and provide a rare window into the complex lives of incarcerated people. Uncuffed classes equip participants to become skilled communicators and mediamakers, driving change inside prison and outside upon their release.

Goals & Objectives

Uncuffed empowers people in prisons to tell their own stories. In our training programs, participants express their humanity, develop job skills and inspire change.

Results & Impact

Stories from Uncuffed air on internal TV networks across the California prison system, and on tablet devices used by incarcerated people nationwide. They’ve re-aired on KALW, NPR, WNYC’s Snap Judgement, and KQED’s statewide program, The California Report Magazine, and won numerous awards.
