About This Project
Summary
Over 200,000 people were deported from Nazi Germany and murdered – because they were Jews, Sinti and Roma or disabled. At least 600 photos of these deportations exist – powerful and important historical images. They show how the deportees were taken away, while their neighbors were watching. #LastSeen makes these images available online - with historical context annotated on each photo. This unique technology helps people to learn about this darkest chapter of history through original images.
Goals & Objectives
#LastSeen started with the idea to make contextualized deportation images available online for heterogenous audiences, so that different target groups can learn about this key aspect of the Holocaust and gain visual literacy. We identify victims and tell their stories, because they matter most.
Results & Impact
#LastSeen set new standards and became the key project for historical images of the Holocaust online. In two years, we reached over 80,000 users, inspired historians to conduct further research, collaborated with students, and received very moving feedback from families of survivors and victims.
