About This Project
Summary
"You, Me and My (Mental) Illness," is an immersive journalism podcast about what it's like to live with a mental illness and how it reshapes relationships. Those relationships can be with a parent, child, friend or it could be with one's job, church or medication. The first season is focused on a teenage girl named Remy and her mom, Joy. The strategy was to interview them several times then piece together narratives showing how they navigate the very difficult landscape of this illness.
Goals & Objectives
The project's goal is to tell stories about living with a mental illness. I'd seen how a mental illness can forms cracks in relationships - which can isolate the person who is living with the diagnosis. That kind of isolation worsens one's illness. My objective was to document the cracks and bonds.
Results & Impact
With each episode, we host a community-based free discussion. Attendees listen and reflect. Remy and her mother are present. These discussions have shown the podcast's reach and Remy has told us how this project has helped her see what she can offer her community. Podcast metrics are positive, too.
