About This Project

Summary

Millions of Americans can trace their family history back to apartments like the ones preserved at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York City. That’s why Mellon was there when the museum debuted a permanent exhibition on a Black family's story. We chose to focus on not just the exhibit but showcase the expertise of lead researcher Marquis Taylor. Our photographic and written exploration went behind the scenes to show our audience what it takes to build this historic exhibit.

Goals & Objectives

Highlight the under-covered scholarship and efforts of researchers like Marquis Taylor. Document, archive, and provide to the Tenement Museum a set of high-caliber photography of the exhibition and related professionals, license free for educational purposes.

Results & Impact

Reached wide audience of 1MM annual web visitors, 65K email subscribers, and 130K combined social followers via Foundation's digital channels. Most shared IG post in 2025. Produced original photography that can be re-purposed by the Museum in support of its mission and educational offerings.
