About This Project
Summary
Pause Cancer Debt is a joint initiative by Andy Janning and New Orleans Firemen's FCU, launched through a powerful video sharing the true story of “Tina,” a cancer patient overwhelmed by debt during treatment. NOFFCU responded with a 0% loan and 12-month deferral. The project reveals how cancer worsens financial stress, which in turn harms recovery. By using emotional storytelling and real impact, it drives national awareness and inspires financial institutions to take meaningful action.
Goals & Objectives
The project aimed to spotlight the crushing financial burden cancer places on patients, reduce treatment-related stress, and inspire credit unions and banks to offer 0%, deferred payment programs that relieve economic pressure, improve recovery outcomes, and restore dignity.
Results & Impact
What began with one member’s story reached over 28K locally and is a growing national initiative. Five credit unions now offer 0% loans and payment deferrals to cancer patients. The model is expanding, inspiring institutions nationwide to prioritize financial compassion during cancer treatment.
