About This Project
Summary
Maternal nutrition advice in Nepal is often complex and disconnected from daily meals. Co-designed with mothers, caregivers, nurses, and local communities, the Thali Model uses a real Nepali thali—familiar foods and portions—to make guidance clear for pregnant and postpartum women. By grounding advice in everyday meals and simple katori proportions, the tool makes nutrition practical in busy, low-literacy hospital settings.
Goals & Objectives
Our goals: make maternal nutrition guidance clear, culturally relevant, and easy to act on for mothers and families; equip nurses with a tool that feels practical and natural during counselling; and strengthen overall understanding of balanced diets during pregnancy and postpartum.
Results & Impact
The Thali Model saw rapid uptake: 93.4% of CCP sessions used it, and nurses chose it in 65 of 66 observations. Families found the diet guidance highly helpful, and nurses reported clearer conversations. With broad adoption across Nepal, the model is reshaping maternal nutrition counseling.
