Summary
Not For Sale, REBBL, and AFIMAD (an Indigenous co-op seed funded by Not For Sale & REBBL) partnered to uplift Indigenous communities in the Peruvian Amazon through an ethical Brazil nut supply chain. By embedding dignity and opportunity into each step, from forest to shelf via training and capacity building, we created sustainable livelihoods that reduced exploitation, protected the rainforest, and returned profits to Indigenous community-led development.
Goals & Objectives
People: reduce trafficking by training Indigenous communities in ethical harvesting of Brazil nuts, provide dignified work; Planet: protect the Amazon rainforest through ethical harvesting of Brazil nuts; Profit: increase Indigenous people's profit of the Brazil nut, protecting them from trafficking
Results & Impact
People: reduced trafficking to nearly zero in 10 Indigenous communities, representing over 4,200 people; Planet: protect 753+ square miles of Amazon rainforest, larger than greater London; Profit: communities now capture over 50% of the value of the Brazil nut supply chain, up from close to zero.
