Summary
The NYC Breastfeeding Warmline is a unique, free virtual service launched during COVID-19 to support low-income and BIPOC families facing systemic breastfeeding barriers. It provides rapid, culturally reflective lactation support and has served over 1,100 families. The Warmline also serves as a workforce pathway, helping diversify the racial, ethnic, and linguistic makeup of lactation professionals in NYC.
Goals & Objectives
The NYC Breastfeeding Warmline offers real-time, culturally and linguistically concordant feeding support, aiming to connect callers within 15 minutes. Staff also run Baby Cafes in the Bronx and Queens, plus a prenatal class to support families before their feeding journey begins.
Results & Impact
The Warmline has supported 1,100+ callers, 70% of whom receive Medicaid, SNAP, or WIC. It provides quality lactation support regardless of income. 23% of callers identify as Black, 45% as Hispanic/Latino. Over 90% felt supported in meeting feeding goals and would recommend the service.
