About This Project

Summary

The gun industry has a responsibility to keep Americans safe from gun violence. Yet there is no transparency into which gun stores are violating our public safety laws and whether law enforcement is doing anything about it. Rad Campaign partnered with Brady campaign to build a data visualization exposing never-before-released records that identify gun stores cited for breaking the law. The user-friendly design empowers people to explore the data, viewing ATF reports by zip, year, and violation.

Goals & Objectives

To create the largest database of ATF inspection reports ever released to the public. Provide options for users to navigate data via searchable maps with a connected table display of results and as pop-up info cards showing key info about a specific gun store, its violations, and a link to reports.

Results & Impact

With a high website engagement rate and massive media coverage, GunsStoreTransparency.org has seen a huge return on investment. The site has garnered the attention of key policymakers, advocates, researchers, and law enforcement and put pressure on Congress to pass a gun safety bill.
