About This Project
Summary
The emmy-award winning VICTIM/SUSPECT chronicles journalist Rae de Leon’s investigation into a disturbing pattern: young women report sexual assault to the police and instead of the perpetrators being brought to justice, the women are arrested for filing a false report. The core impact strategy is to share the film and supporting resources to help frontline advocates better understand, respond to, and support those reporting sexual assault, from first responders to policymakers to reporters.
Goals & Objectives
The goal of our impact campaign is to use the feature documentary VICTIM/SUSPECT to help eradicate the practice of treating victims like suspects without evidence, and to provide victims and their allies with tools to guard against this practice.
Results & Impact
Created tip sheet to protect survivors when reporting. Helped inspire state & US lawmakers to write a model law to protect victims & require trauma informed investigations. Created training for criminal legal system with IL AGs office. Compelled news outlets to remove articles that publish victim
